S.E.W.I.N.G

S.E.W.I.N.G

“A space where the Women of Elkstones can meet regularly to learn something new, discuss issues of interest and keep in touch.”

Due to Covid 19 there are no S.E.W.I.N.G meetings taking place at the moment.

As soon as life returns to normal meetings will be posted here.

Jill, Tyra and Katy were admiring the bunting Judy had borrowed from her sister to put up at the village picnic in August 2016.  Someone suggested we make some bunting of our own to use at village events,  just as Edna Ash had done many years before ….we could have a sewing group!  We went on to talk about how we’d all like to have a women’s group in Elkstones ….sewing could be involved but not necessarily! We know that the Women’s Institute ran very successfully in the village for several years but we didn’t want the bureaucracy that would bring.   It was decided that we would try to run sessions led by the women of Elkstones for the women of Elkstones.

The S.E.W.I.N.G. group first met in March 2017 and continues to meet during the last week of every month, apart from December.  Days of the week change to enable those who have regular weekly commitment to attend at least some of the time.

They are held when possible in St. John’s church or, in the winter, in people’s homes.  Activities have included flower arranging, crochet, felting, egg-decorating, wirework creations, cup cake decorating to name but a few.  We have also had discussions on the suffragettes, childhood memories, our favourite children’s book, demonstrations on cheese making, pickle and gin making, a visit to a local garden, a bird watching walk, wild flower walk and a “Lambing Live” evening.

And did we make any bunting?   Yes we did, though we probably still need more to make a real show.
